OSTEOPOROSIS
If
you have osteopenia or osteoporosis, you might already know that
weight-bearing and resistance based exercise is key to keeping bone
density. But did you know that Sherri Betz, a PT in Santa Cruz,
CA has done a study on osteoporosis and pilates and has seen some
individuals gain up to 15% bone density? The newest studies have shown that high impact sports like running or aerobics are the best bone stimulates.
Ironically, most people (not always women!) suffering from
osteoporosis, can't or shouldn't really do these high impact activities
due to injury or pain. But bone can be stimulated without high
impact, just the muscles pulling on the bone can really help build or
maintain bone density. Mat exercises like the breast
stroke and side leg lift series are especially good because they work
the muscles in the areas most commonly affected by osteoporosis, the
spine and hip joints.
The reformer is especially helpful because of the continuous resistance. The
footwork is great because it puts load on the spine and hips and if you
can do jumpboard without discomfort, that is even better.
It's encouraging to know that if you're already doing pilates you are on the right track. And
if you know someone who has osteopenia or osteoporosis and they can't
run or do aerobics, let them know about pilates.
